We all have a superpower…something we are really good at. Even if you’re new to Sales Leadership you will have it. Something you may not even realise you do simply because it’s deep within you and so natural.
It could be that you put people at ease, or you have great empathy skills, or you make people feel able to take the next challenge. It could be anything…and you may not be utilising it to its full impact simply because it doesn’t feel like you’re doing anything or that you normally use it in another context.
That’s the power of mastery
When you’ve mastered a skill it’s effortless. It’s so easy that you don’t even notice you’re doing it. That’s why you may not realise the power of it…and worse, you may not be using it in the situations where it can have the most impact.
Mastery occurs over time. Our greatest leadership skills start developing in childhood…way before you even start working. The way you interact with other people is what makes a great leader.
The interesting thing is that you may not use your superpower in all situations…let me tell you a story.
I did a single coaching session for a person that was new to leadership. They were not totally confident in their new role and decided they needed some coaching in how to be a good leader.
The person shared that in their spare time they were very actively involved in sport and in fact travelled the world refereeing games.
When we explored the skills required in their sporting activities, guess what…they were totally transferrable to leadership.
Once they saw and felt the connection, they didn’t need another coaching session…they simply needed to go and apply their mastery in a different context. With a few easy tweaks to suit their team they excelled.
Could that be you?
Do you have a superpower that you’re not using with your sales team simply because you don’t normally use it in that context?
Uncovering your hidden superpowers is simple. Give yourself permission to sit and ponder your responses. Sometimes they came easy and fast…sometimes you have to ponder for longer or deeper. Stay with it and you will be rewarded 😊
Steps to discovering your hidden superpowers
- List all the things you are really good at outside of work…think parenting, sport, friendship, creativity, gardening, cooking and anywhere else you’re active in. Your superpowers are everywhere when you start digging.
- For each thing you are really good at…list all the attributes, characteristics and qualities that create the behaviours you exhibit every time you’re engaged in your activity that lead to your success in this area.
- Look at each attribute, characteristic, quality and behaviour and identify how you can apply this in your leadership to grow your own success and the success of your team. Superpowers must have a positive benefit for all concerned or they become a manipulation which leads to a totally different outcome…and another blog 😉
- Put these ideas into action and measure the results. Your superpowers will often require subtle tweaks to create the same success in a different situation.
Now go and do some digging 😊
I’d love to know how you get on so please share your experiences!
Until next time,
Leigh 😊
